In yet another instalment of the of the C-suite and digital transformation, the focus is on the Chief Operations Officers (COOs) and their role in Digital Transformation. Like the previous article collates recommendations and good practice from experts from all over the world on the COOs and digital transformation. COOs leverage technology, new channels and capabilities that prioritises serving customers in the digital realm.

Gone are the days when the Chief Operations Officer (COO) had excellent business and relationship acumen but lacked technology expertise. In today’s world, the COO must be the visionary leader who understands that IT is not just a tool but a strategic enabler. The COO uses leadership skills to ensure their business utilises the best technology while maintaining the right level of risk to make the organisation safe.

For the COO to successfully drive digital transformation, the following should be considered:

  • Automation and Efficiency: The COO should ensure that the organisation operates like a well-oiled machine through process automation.
  • Enhanced Customer Experience: The COO should leverage technology to create personalised, seamless interactions.
  • Supply Chain Resilience: The COO should use technology to enhance supply chain visibility, track shipments in real time, and identify potential disruptions.
  • Guarding the Digital Fortress: The COO should prioritise cybersecurity as a non-negotiable
  • Fostering a Culture of Innovation: The COO should encourage cross-functional collaboration, where ideas flow freely, and creativity knows no bounds.

Once the mind has been set to commit to the above, there are three recommended ways to move faster on digital transformation:

  • Assess your outcomes and identify your goals: Assess your current business outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement. Are there specific results you’d like to achieve? Pinpoint exactly what that success would look like and what metrics you would use to measure it.
  • Tackle the Lowest Hanging Fruit: Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is often considered as a low hanging fruit; since it is perceived to be achieved easily by automating mundane and repetitive type of processes before building a cognitive, artificially intelligent and self-learning system.
  • Take incremental risks: This is a dramatic simplification, but you can readily see how this incremental approach allows digital solutions to get into production environments as quickly as possible by starting small and building over time.

The advantage to this mindset from a digital transformation perspective is that small, continuous improvements to those work processes and practices are relatively easy to implement quickly yet can have an outsized impact on operations when spread across thousands or millions of interactions and months of incremental change.

Secure the Right Support

Essentially, you need to achieve a deep level of understanding across the board. This will involve investing substantial time in educating key figures on what it will involve, what it will achieve, and what their role will be.

You’ll know you have the right support when board members and the C-level executives are able to respond accurately to these key questions (and enact the answers):

  • What are we transforming into and why?
  • Their response should be straight-forward, succinct and simple.
  • What does this mean from the perspective of my function?

Their response should be easily understood, thereby creating buy-in with the full suite of operational staff who are the true enactors of change.

Key Take Away

The COO’s role in digital transformation is a journey that demands vision, courage, and an unwavering commitment to operational excellence. To all the COOs driving digital transformation, embrace your role as technological visionaries. Lead with conviction and purpose. Embrace change as an opportunity, not a challenge. Digital transformation is not a destination; it’s a continuous journey toward operational excellence.
